He was born in Tiflis in 1887, died in Yerevan in 1961.

In 1915 he graduated from the law faculty of the Petersburg University and the Petersburg Conservatory, took lessons at A. Lyadov (harmony), A. Glazunov, M. Shtainberg (orchestration), V. Kalafati (sound arrangement), Ya. Vitol (analysis of forms). He lectured theoretical subjects in the Conservatories of Tiflis (1917-1925) and Yerevan (1926-1934). Since 1934 he was a professor, since 1938 - head of the class of instrumentation, then from 1948 to 1959 he was the head of the faculty.
