He was born in Yerevan in 1930, died in Yerevan in 1998. In 1953 he graduated from the Yerevan Conservatory, the class of compositions after G. Yeghiazarian, in 1957 - the post-graduate courses of the Moscow Conservatory under the leadership of A. Khachatrian.

From 1962 until 1968 he was the director of the Yerevan Theatre of Opera and Ballet. From 1970 until 1974 he was the artistic leader of the State ensemble of the Armenian folk music and dances, from 1956 until 1973 - the deputy chief of the Armenian Composers’ Union.

From 1986 until 1992 he was the rector of the Yerevan Conservatory.
